Ullswater - a lake of scenic contrasts

Ullswater is the second largest lake in the Lake District and one of scenic contrasts, from grand rugged mountains at one end to rolling moors and woods at the other.

There are excellent walking opportunities at all levels - along the shore, over the moors or up into the mountains.

It was along the shores of Ullswater that the poet William Wordsworth encountered the daffodils - immortalised in his poem.

A regular ferry service, the famous Ullswater “Steamers”, operates up and down the lake all year round except Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
“Steamers” have been in service on Ullswater for over 150 years and they offer the opportunity to combine a lake cruise with a walk or just to enjoy a lake cruise viewing the spectacular scenery en route.

There is plenty to see and enjoy nearby:

The villages of Glenridding and Pooley Bridge offer shops and refreshment.

The spectacular Aira Force waterfall is a renowned landmark and one easily reached on foot.

Dalemain historic house is a short drive away. House, gardens, gift shop and tearoom are available.
